How to Read Guitar Tabs

March 26th, 2008 · 28 Comments

Hey! If you're new here, make sure that the first thing you do is download my FREE "How to Read Guitar Tabs" guide, complete with really simple to follow video lessons. Grab the FREE Tabs Guide right here!

how to read guitar tabsGuitar tablature is the simplest method of transcribing and reading guitar music. You don’t have to know how to read traditional music to read guitar “tabs”. However, if you decide to learn to play this way, you will have to learn to overcome a few limitations.

Rhythm is the biggest problem you will encounter when reading tabs because there is no way to denote rhythmic figures. You’ll see the notes that you need to play but you won’t be able to tell by the notation how long to play each note. You will be better off if you can hear the piece or if you know the song you are learning to play. If you try to learn a new piece that you’ve never heard before, you’ll find yourself stumbling over the melody.

The other main drawback is that tabs don’t explain fingering. The tabs will show you what frets to put your fingers on, but not what specific fingers to put on the frets. This can be frustrating for technical personalities who want to be shown exact fingering for playing a song. If you find yourself frustrated by this tab limitation, you should probably consider learning to read traditional music

Even though these two limitations are present, they haven’t stopped guitar tablature from becoming the most popular way to read and notate guitar music, and by combining tabs with some other basic knowledge, you can be off and running in no time. To really get the hang of it, there are a couple things I would suggest you do right away.

First, click here to download my free guide to reading guitar tabs. It comes complimentary just for joining my newsletter (where you’ll also get loads more lessons — all free by the way).

Second, to really jumpstart your playing, pick up an inexpensive membership to one of the online guitar learning programs. There’s one that’s offering around a 50% discount for a limited time right now, making it less than the cost of a couple pizzas. It’s an insane bargain, and you can find that right here (click on the link to check it out. I think you’ll be impressed.)

And now onto the guitar tab tutorial…

HOW TO READ TABS

Many musicians have an ‘ear’ for how melodies should sound and don’t mind trading the lack of rhythmic notation for an easy way to look at the music without having to learn years of traditional music theory. Tabs are a visual representation of the fret board of a guitar. Six lines are present representing the six strings of the guitar with the bottom line being the lowest “E” string. The second string represents the “A” string and so forth.

E————————-
B————————-
G————————-
D————————-
A————————-
E————————-

Melody

Numbers are placed on the lines that simply represent which fret to place your finger on. So in the following example, you would put a finger on the 4th fret of the “B” string, and play that note twice. Then you’d put a finger on the 2nd fret of the “G” string and play that once. When the number “0” is used, it indicates that you are to play an open string. So, in this example, after the 2nd fret of the “G” is played, you would play the open “D” string.

E————————-
B——4—4————-
G—————–2——
D———————-0–
A————————-
E————————-

Chords

When numbers are stacked up vertically on the tab, it means you should play them all at the same time resulting in a chord. By definition, a chord is a combination of 3 or more tones played at the same time. So in this example, you would play 5 notes: The open “E” string, the first fret of the “B” string, the open “G” string, the 2nd fret of the “D” string, and the 3rd fret of the “A” string. This is the “C” Chord, and often it will be notated above the notation to help you out.

C

E———-0————-
B———-1————-
G———-0————-
D———-2————-
A———-3————-
E————————-

Other Symbols you might see in TAB and what they mean:

h - hammer on
p - pull off
b - bend string up – pluck first note and bend string up (or down).
r - release bend
/ - slide up- Pick the first note, keep pressure while sliding to the next. Don’t pick the note you slide to.
\ - slide down
v - vibrato (sometimes written as ~) – shake the note by toggling the fretting hand wrist.
t - tap (with strumming hand)
x - muted, struck string

These notations are to help you interpret the piece of music you are learning to play. You can consult magazine legends (keys, as to a map) to describe particular symbols you might see in magazines or online.

What’s The Best Way To Care For My Guitar?

July 3rd, 2009 · No Comments

Keeping your guitar in the best possible condition is paramount to enjoying the full life and playability of your instrument. Care and maintenance can sometimes seem secondary to playing, but if you want to continue playing for a long time, then it’s absolutely vital. We have assembled some of the best tips to keep your guitar in tip-top condition. By following these steps, you will find that the guitar will last as long as you want it to!

·    After Practicing
If the strings start to rust, then they become very rough and have a higher propensity of cutting into your fingers. The deterioration of the strings is a common problem amongst guitarists. A guitarist with cut fingers is not going to play as well, so it is important to make sure that the strings of your guitar do not get to this stage. To prevent this, make sure that as soon as you have finished practicing take a soft cloth and clean the strings.

Before you re-case your guitar, you might want to think about applying a thin layer of string conditioner – these solutions are relatively inexpensive (a good one will cost less than ten US dollars) and they do a great job of preventing the oxidization of the strings that causes them to rust. This is a very simple action, but it will get rid of all the oil, dirt and sweat that can accumulate on the strings.

·    Clean the fretboard
The next time you change your strings, take a look at the fretboards and clean them with a damp cloth. As well as the strings, there can often be an accumulation of dirt and grease around the fretboards. If unchecked, this can damage the sound of the guitar, and eventually the integrity of the instrument.

·    Polishing
By paying attention to the body of your guitar, you are more likely to sustain the overall life of the instrument. The body of the guitar can often be neglected, as people tend to focus on the strings and the fretboard. Polish it regularly with a lint-free cloth, using only guitar-specific polishes. Some more widely available household polishes arte too abrasive, and can cause damage.

·    Storage
For ideal conditions, you should be looking at storing your guitar at around 50% humidity and a temperature of around 25 degrees C. Your guitar is a very sensitive instrument, and is extremely sensitive to the environment in which it is stored. Wood is a porous substance, which means it can absorb moisture. Whilst most guitars are tolerant to a range of temperatures, excessive moisture will cause swelling which in turn causes the wood to warp and affects the overall sound.

·    Scratches

It may sound obvious, but you’d be amazed at how many people have made this mistake! Before you even start to play, make sure you have removed all your jewellery and other accoutrements that may damage your guitar. The obvious things are things like bracelets and rings, but I have also seen expensive guitars scratched badly by something as simple as a belt buckle!

Guitar maintenance is not rocket science, and by treating your guitar with the respect that it deserves, you will get better rewards out of playing it. For the majority of the time, simply by applying common sense you will prolong the lifespan of your guitar.

What Are Guitar Tabs

July 3rd, 2009 · No Comments

In the simplest terms, a guitar tab is a word that is used to describe a musical notation, which may contain either numbers or letters and explains to the musician where to place his/her fingers on the acoustic electric guitar. Multiple lines called a “staff notation” are what make up a guitar tab.’ These lines, which are present in guitar tabs, each represent one of the guitar strings.

New musicians often find guitar tabs to be especially baffling in that the strings are written backwards. Guitar tabs are written with the highest string at the top and since most people would expect tabs to written from top to bottom instead of the other way around, it can be difficult. The numbers on each line represent the guitar frets and guitar tabs are written from the highest to the lowest string in actuality. In order to understand guitar tabs, all new guitarists need to learn string placement and how to correctly read frets.

Guitar tabs may vary slightly depending on the music publisher but are generally written in a standard format. Beside, reading guitar tabs is way easier than learning staff notation. More than any other kind of music, new musicians are more comfortable reading guitar tabs because of their visual representation.

Learning the acoustic electric guitar also means you need to learn how your guitar works and be very familiar with it. This can be done in many ways including videos, reference books and even private instruction. In some cases, classroom lessons may even be used to help better equip the musician to learn electric guitar and how to read guitar tabs. As a musician, you need to familiarize yourself with certain terms used to describe the guitar such as strings, fret, neck and chord., he/she will also begin to easily read guitar tabs.

As you begin to play don’t be intimidated by guitar tabs. Tabs may seem a bit confusing because of all the lines, symbols, numbers and letters. With practice and time, a guitar tab will be as easy to understand as the links found your favorite website. Few musicians can play by ear without first learning a song via sheet music, which is why reading guitar tabs is the first step that a guitarist must take before learning how to play.

If you need further information on finding a guitar instructor, check the local yellow page listing or stop by your local high school or college and ask the music director for a recommendation.

Do you have Bass Amps?

June 29th, 2009 · No Comments

Bass Amps

The bass amp makes it possible for the generation of excellent audio output and that is something that a bass player requires on priority. The market is awash with many types of bass amps, out of which you need to pick the one suited for you as it is only with the bass amp that you can add punch to your guitar. The other accessory you need to pick up is the correct Head and Cabinet combination.

The size of the bass speakers is very important.
You need excellent quality speakers in addition to appropriately sized bass cabinets to generate superior audio output. It is a misnomer to think that big speakers play the lower frequency notes better as it is the playing style of the bassist that should actually determine the kind of speakers.

It is a known fact that even speakers of smaller dimensions can produce superior quality sound and that is especially true when the need is for precise playing like slapping. It is advisable to go for the mid range 12 to 15 inch speaker size as they can produce broader tones and can adapt to different music quite well.

A richer musical experience can be obtained through the mid range size speakers, rather than the small 8 inch ones, as the tone comes across as too flat. The speakers with 18 inch dimensions are not able to give you finer frequencies and come across as quite loose. You, as a musician need to go for varied sized speakers, each catering to a set of frequencies to get the real effect of bass music.

Many a time, these different speakers are ensconced within one enclosure and serve to provide the right output; so the 15 inch speakers can provide the low range, the 10 inch dual speakers can take care of the midrange and with tweeters situated above, the high pitch frequencies can be managed effectively. You have to ensure that the space within which the speakers are housed do not prevent the flow of air as this can impede the sound quality.

Protect the speaker cones.
In bass speakers, another part that needs to be taken care of is the grid that protects the diaphragm of the cones and these needs to be tough enough to withstand rigors of any journey that you may undertake. Tough metal trimmings along with tough shields in the form of caps on the sides of the boxes containing the speakers will prevent any dent to them when they are transported.

Top 10 Guitar Players

June 29th, 2009 · No Comments

Okay, I’m sure you’ve gotten an argument with your buddies at some point, comparing who you think are the top 10 guitar players of all time. We’ve all been there, but here’s the thing that few realize. Rock and Roll isn’t competition, it’s not about who’s better at this or that. Plus, there’s a LOT of musical styles, that comparing let’s say a metal shredder and a blues master doesn’t really work all that well. It’s like comparing Country to Rap.

When all is said and done, there’s still many guitarists that most people consider to be the best, and every time these types of lists come up, you will typically find their names are mentioned. These guitar players are either very skilled at a specific technique, or are the most influential guitarists to other musicians, and that’s whey they deserve to be in a top 10 guitar players list.

In my opinion, this is the top 10 list of the most influential guitar players:

1. Jimi Hendrix
Need I say more? Jimi Hendrix is usually at the top of every “top rock guitarists” list! He turned the electric guitar from a novelty into a laboratory, experimenting with sounds never even dreamed of before on the electric guitar. Hendrix’s style of raw, fuzzy, feedback-y sound is instantly recognizable, and he has been the influence for very many younger guitarists. His stage presence is also one of the most mind-blowing and electrifying. “Hey Joe” and “Fire” set the foundation for a towering monument of rock that stands to this day.

2. Jimmy Page
Another Jimmy! The Led Zeppelin guitar master has been very influential to a lot of rockers nowadays, and his guitar licks are legendary and instantly recognizable. His solo of “Heartbreaker” is legendary, and “Black Dog” and “Stairway to Heaven” are earth shattering rock classics. And if you can think of anybody else who has a guitar solo with a violin bow, I’d like to know about it? That’s from “Dazed and Confused”,

3. BB King
When you say blues, everything all boils down to its master and ambassador: BB King. He paved the way for the newer generation of blues players, from Eric Clapton to John Mayer. BB King’s powerful bending and vibrato are classic blues techniques, still used today. Also, his guitar is also legendary – who else names their guitar Lucille?

4. Chuck Berry
You know that four-note riff that always reminds you of 50’s rock n’ roll? That came from Chuck Berry. Today’s rock n’ roll wouldn’t be the same without the great song that is “Johnny B. Goode”!

5. Keith Richards
Keith Richards is a member of one of the longest-lasting, most influential active rock bands The Rolling Stones. Don’t tell me you aren’t aware of that memorable distortion-filled three-note riff from “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”! For all the hits the Stones put out that became foundations of other hit songs, Keith Richards also deserves a spot on the top 10 guitarists list.

6. Kirk Hammett
Metal was never the same Metallica hit the scene. Kirk Hammett rewrote hard rock history with the pounding solos of “Master of Puppets” and, arguably their most popular song, “Enter Sandman”.

7. Carlos Santana
If you’re talking of instantly recognizable tone, there’s the master of Latin-infused rock, Carlos Santana. Before he started collaborating with other musicians, he was a Latin-rhythm purist, improvising with solos that are full of passion and spiritual meaning. Before hits like “Smooth”, there were the soaring, sustained instrumental solos of “Oye Come Va”, “Black Magic Woman” and other magical hits like these.

8. Kurt Cobain
The misunderstood genius, Kurt Cobain single-handedly ended the era of 80’s hair metal in a totally different way. He favored simple, heavy tunes instead of hair metal’s theatric style, and it reflected better the angst of the time. His most memorable contribution to rock and roll was the original anthem of misunderstood generations, the four-chord monster “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.

9. The Edge
While a lot of guitar players think of skill as playing millions of notes at blazing speed, The Edge is known for actually playing short, spare, repetitive solos. But he and his rolling delay effects created the most passionate, most anthemic rock songs in history, from “Bad” to “Where The Streets Have No Name”. With the Edge at the lead, it’s hard not to scream in triumph.

10. Eric Clapton
A true son of the blues, Eric Clapton had influences in rock, creating classics like “Layla” with his early band Derek and the Dominoes, and progressing to one of the most recognizable blues guitarists, from “Bell Bottom Blues” to his heartbreaking “Tears In Heaven”.

I’m sure a lot of you will have top 10 guitar players lists that are very different from mine, but that’s the effect of musical influences; we have a lot of talented guitarists from a lot of different styles and genres to choose from. Whoever we pick as our top 10 guitarists says a lot about our favorite styles, criteria and our personality as guitarists. Until then, just keep roking and rolling!

Famous piano players

June 27th, 2009 · No Comments

Here are details on three of the greatest piano players/composers known to grace the keys.

Ludwig Van Beethoven. Beethoven may be the most famous compsers more to the fact that he composed, wrote and performed his music while becomming deaf in his early twenties. Beethoven was born in December 1770, his grandfather with the same name and his father both had worked in the court of the Elector of Cologne, as later he did. Beethoven moved to Vienna to study counterpoint and violin in 1792, a move that was funded by the Elector. Beethoven noticed he was loosing his hearing in 1796 while in Vienna, which has been rumoured to be because of lead posioning. His work has been divided into three sections -early,middle and late periods. The early period was said to be influenced by Mozart and lasted up until 1806, the middle period went from 1803 untill 1814, and the late period from 1815 until his death.

Wolfgang Mozart. Mozart, born in 1756 is thought to be one of the greatest classical composers, with over six hundred pieces wrote and composed to his name. Mozart ws a child prodigy, composing from the age of 5 and playing to royalty and at seventeen he was employed as court musician in Salzburg. When he visited Vienna is decided to stay there -and this is the city where he became famous, but not rich by any means. Mozart died on December 1791, of what is believed to be rhuematic fever, and rumor goes that he dictatced the rest of his final piece from his deathbed.

Bach. Born in 1865 in Germany, Bach helped to mature the classical subgenre of Baroque, being hugely influential on the genre. Bach’s talent for composing was only really acknowledged during the 19th century after renewed interest in his work. He was only credited as a talented organist during his lifetime. When Bach was orphaned at 10 years of age we was shipped off to live with his brother, an organist. It is from his brother that Bach received more instruction on playing, and became fluent on the Clavicord. Two of the seven Bach children from his first marriage were also great composers in their own right, helping to mould the style known as Rococo -Carl and Wilhem Bach. Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen hired Bach to serve as his director of music in 1717 until 1723, during which time his first wife died in 1720, and he remarried in December 1721. In 1723, Bach was appointed Cantor of Thomasschule, a posistion he held until his death in 1750.

Why You Should Learn To Master A Guitar

June 27th, 2009 · No Comments

Sure you can be the life of the party or someone who is really adored by music lovers or, the list goes on. You can play really good music through the strumming of your guitar. And people would scream out “Encore!” That would be really nice isn’t it? Do you like the idea? Well, read on as this article shows you some of the most exciting and fulfilling advantages when you have learned to master the techniques and chords in the world of guitar music.

Advantage #1

Playing a guitar enhances your thought process to work hard and to command your hands on mentally memorizing where to place your finger on a particular fret, pressing on the right chord and learning the right way to strum.

Advantage #2

The pleasure of gratification is satisfied. Thus, your self-esteem is working its way through your personality. A book once said, a psychological book to be exact, that men has to satisfy basic needs to be able to advance to his self to the highest level which is the self-actualization. Something like that.

Advantage #3

The fact is that a guitar is one of the most convenient instruments there is. Your drums usually can’t go wherever you go. It would be exhausting on your part to carry a drum set around your campus and constantly beat it. It can cause so much distraction. Whereas if you have been a full pledged guitarist your whole life, you could play music where you can.

Advantage #4

Being able to take your guitar everywhere, might as well earn something from it. A talent like that would eventually be discovered. Playing along the streets of downtown is not really the idea but if you consider it, then yes, you could try. You could ask some of your friends to back you up.

Advantage #5

You, yourself, is a unique individual. Out of ten people only one becomes an accomplished musician. And by some luck, that person is a guitarist. Or can be someone with ultra musical talent who can play not only the guitar but many different instruments and even some percussion ones. Some say it is taught but real talent comes from deep inside. It is that spirit within you that makes you distinct.

Advantage #6

Nobody can call you a guitarist with no specific talent. Yes, you could fail all of your tests and miss every graded recitation during school hours but when those various parties come, you are the star. Even an A+ won’t top the popularity you can get from being an artist.

Advantage #7

You are the “it” guy. Everyone can hate you or mess you up. But the moment you have learned to become a master in your own craft, everyone will recognize how good you are. Even those who never or didn’t know you will find an effort to. People will love you for the talent that you are.

More advantages are seen by simply playing the guitar. Playing is one thing but mastering is another. So if you are still struggling to play such tunes, don’t give up that dream. Although it may be only a hobby or past time, you never know, with skill, it may take you to new heights. Something brighter. Something more intense. Something close to Hollywood.

Tips for Buying a New Guitar

June 27th, 2009 · No Comments

Custom Guitar Bulider Video

Guitars - custom guitars are still made today. The video above gives you a bit of history about hand made guitars over the last 40 years. Most guitar buyers aren’t fortunate enough (or rich enough) to buy a custom or hand made guitar. The good news is that guitar manufacturers have some good guitars at affordable prices for us “regular” folks.

Whether you are a beginner guitar player or an experienced guitarist…

Maybe you need to buy your first guitar, or you possibly want to buy a better guitar than the one you are using. Or, you may be wanting a different style of guitar or are just adding another instrument to a collection.

Either way, it’s a good idea to do some research before buying a guitar. The best places to do this research is in guitar shops, guitar magazines and, of course, check what is available online. Through these three sources, you can compare prices and styles of guitars. You can also read many online blogs with great information about guitars and guitar lessons.

Find information about guitar manufacturers and read reviews by musicians, or if you have friends who play the guitar, you can also ask them for their opinions and recommendations. If there are local music stores in your town, visit those stores and test out their guitars. Focus on how the guitars you try out sound and if they are easy to play (you don’t need to worry about your playing abilities). Look carefully at the neck and body and make sure the guitar is not warped (especially check the neck to see that it is straight, not bowed in any way).

Play it first before you buy a guitar!

When you try out a guitar that you might want to buy, when you strum there should not be a buzzing sound. When you try to press the strings down, check to see that they are not too far away from the fretboard.

For electric guitars, check the volume by having the guitar plugged into an amplifier when you test it. Check the pickups and the tone and volume controls. Music store salespeople may be able to play guitar - ask them to test some of the guitars for you. A really good option is to bring a guitarist friend to the stores with you so they can play the guitar and give you their opinions.

Once you have an idea of the range of prices for new guitars, figure out what your budget will be and stick to it when you actually go out to make the purchase. Before negotiating on prices with a store sales clerk, you need to know the current information and prices about several guitar brands. They are there to convice you to spend money - and they could possibly persuade you to spend more than you planned to spend.

If this is your first guitar, you probably should not consider buying your instrument in an online auction. The reason I can’t recommend buying through an auction is because you really should play a guitar before you buy it. The preference of the feel of the guitar as you play it and hold it is going to vary from one individual to another. Your goal is to find a guitar (within your budget) that feels and sounds right to you.

Choosing The Right Musical Instrument For Your Child

June 24th, 2009 · No Comments

To help a child develop an appreciation for music, many parents encourage their children to learn to play a musical instrument.

The first instrument is often a music keyboard. These stimulate interest in music even in very young children and they are reasonably priced. Some of the very low cost keyboards are very limited so ask your school music teacher for advice. Like a real piaano, higher priced keyboards play notes softer when they are hit softer.

A particular instrument may sound better to your child over another. If you initially go with the childs ideas it can be a major motivational factor in getting them to practice. in the first few years of their music education, many children change instruments some two or three times.

Woodwind instruments, like the clarinet are often easier to play than brass instruments like the trumpet or trombone. Woodwind instruments do not require the lip vibrations that brass players need.

Most young people’s choice of musical instrument is a matter of chance. Their choice often depends on the instruments begin played by visiting music teachers.

More professional musicains play violin than any other instrument. This is why many parent encourage their children to learn to play violin to begin with. Buying a violin is a tricky business.

On the internet you can buy a violin for under 70 dollars. Do you need to buy it? Only if you want your child to to try an instrument but do not want the hassle of renting.

A violin is not just a pair of shoes. Shoes are designed to be used and thrown away when they wears out. A well made student violincan last for hundreds of years when taken care of. The 70 dollar violin above can just be thrown away when it is no longer usuable. Buying a low cost quality violin is a good way to determine if your child really has an interest in learning to play.

It might be a better idea to rent an instrument before you buy if your child is just beginning to learn to play until you determine if they will stick with it or not. That is the point at which you should consider buying. Buy a cheaper instrument to begin with if you don’t have access to a rental program.

Buy the highest quality music instrumentsyou can afford. For the most part, the higher priced instrument has a better tonal quality because price is often linked with the quality of the instrument’s tone. Listen to a range of violins, pianos or trumpets being played by musicians and you will notice differences between the different instruments. Always buy a musical instrument you and your child like the sound from. As your child learn his instrument, the ear will learn to attune itself to any deficiencies an instrument may have and the pleasure if playing it will be enhanced greatly.
