When people ask me whether it’s possible to learn the guitar, my reply depends on the mood I’m in. You see, I am a self-taught guitarist, so my honest answer is always yes, since I taught myself the guitar without any instructors guiding me. However, back when I was learning, teaching yourself the guitar wasn’t as simple as it is today. I learned from learn guitar books and from videos, and it took way too long, as the information available wasn’t as abundant as it is today in the world of the Internet.
In the age of the world wide web, the only things you can’t find information on is the ones you don’t search for. There is an abundance of content for learning the guitar, everything from learning to read tablature, play chords, and even beginner guitar songs. The problem is actually with the abundance of info, since newbie guitar players usually don’t stick with a given site and lesson play, but instead, skip between online guitar lesson sites, which is not a very good way to go.
There is a lot of information and products out there, and to tell you the truth, some of them are pretty good. Of course, you’ll need to beware the scam offers, where the tag line reads “Become a Guitar Hero Overnight”. That is NOT possible, never was, never will be. But if you do find the right website and stick with a learning program that you find motivating and fun, you’ll definitely be able to teach yourself to play the guitar. It takes work, but it’s more than worth it in the end.
In my years of teaching, I’ve found that the best way to keep a student motivated, is to start playing real songs right from the beginning. Playing easy guitar songs is possible from virtually day 1, and it gives a tremendous confidence boost to the beginner guitar student.
My guitar teaching program follows the following “path”:
1. First of all, learn the basic building blocks of playing the guitar.
2. Use the basic techniques learned in simple, yet famous guitar songs
3. Next I teach my students how to play chords
4. Use the guitar chords from step 3. to learn easy songs that require the strumming of chords
5. Move on to another guitar technique
6. Practice these techniques by playing more songs
I think you see the point of learning guitar with this method. You basically only use normal exercises when first encountering a new technical element, but actually learn it and learn to use it by playing popular beginner guitar songs which require it. I’ve used this method with hundreds of personal students, and thousands of online guitarists as well. The result of the process is the increased motivational factor, in that the beginner guitar student will actually want to practice on his/her own time as well, since they’ll already be making music.
I hope you can now see the basis of my proven method for really teach yourself to play guitar. You CAN learn the guitar on your own, it is easier than ever over the Internet. You don’t need to buy guitar books or chord posters, you just need an Internet connection to get access to a whole new world, that of music.
